- Description:
- Congressman Carl Albert and other representatives from Indian states were outvoted by Eastern Republicans in their efforts to increase funding for Indian education in the Interior Department appropriation bill. The proposed cuts will result in the closure of half of Oklahoma's Indian boarding schools and reduce federal aid to school districts serving Indian pupils. Despite objections, the budget cuts were approved in the House, but it is expected that some cuts may be restored in the Senate.
