- Johnny Shoup, a high school student from Williams, Oklahoma, wrote to Congressman Carl Albert in 1951 requesting information about the geological formations in LeFlore County. The document was forwarded to the Director of Geological Survey, who responded with information about the origin of natural features in the county and provided topographic maps and publications. The Director also mentioned the New Madrid earthquake of 1811-1812 and offered to send a report on the earthquake history of the United States.
