The Bureau appreciates the support of the Daughters of the American Revolution in providing scholarships for Indian students. The Bureau recognizes individuals as Indians regardless of their degree of Indian blood if they are enrolled members of a tribe. Assistance for Indians living independently among the general population must be obtained from available sources. The Federal Government provides assistance programs for needy Indians on or near reservations, with criteria such as possession of Indian blood and residence on reservation or trust property. Mrs. Driskell's letter and Senator Harris' response have been enclosed for review.";
