Kerchee wrote a letter to Senator Monroney regarding a report made by the Area Indian Office at Anadarko questioning his competency to manage his affairs. The Area Director, Will J. Pitner, explained that due to a serious injury in 1951, Kerchee was left paralyzed and unable to work, and therefore, the Bureau of Indian Affairs needed to assist, guide, and supervise him in the disposition of his valuable real estate. Despite Kerchee's protests, the Bureau approved a supervised sale of his land in 1962. Senator Monroney requested a reconsideration of Kerchee's ability to manage his affairs based on letters from an attorney, doctors, and the County Court.
